about

The final track is a sonic journey through the ambient sounds I have experienced while learning mbira from William Chitauro and others in the rural areas of Zimbabwe (kumusha). I am trying to capture the quality of sound both outside and inside, the way you can hear both near and distant voices, kitchen sounds, people just playing mbira for themselves, in a group with hosho (shakers), the mbira hits on the sound system and the clientele at the bottle store and the birdsong, always the birdsong from the ealy morning of the beginning of the track through pigeons nesting in the eves of the roundhouse to the call of the nightjar in the dark.
The trajectory of the piece is a condensation of a day from distant cock crowing to the fading sounds of celebration at night merging into the call of the nightjar.
