Some years ago at the much missed African Drum Village Festival in Glenisla, Scotland, a group of us were talking with Chartwell about whether it was possible to join together the Scottish and the Shona cultural elements of the gathering - as part of the festival there were workshops and performances of African dance and music as well as a traditional Scottish ceilidh with stovies!
Possibly because of being in a ceilidh band for many years and also having played mbira for several years it came into my head that the Scottish tune The Atholl Highlanders would work with the well known mbira tune Bukatiende.
We worked on it briefly and peformed a version that night but it wasn't quite right though it did go down well :)
It turned out the Atholl Highlanders needed a bit of subversion to fit so this track is the result with a nod to the wonderful guitar work of the Zimbabwean group The Four Brothers. If you don't know their music then you have a treat awaiting.
The title Arise and Go is both a nod to the celtic (Yeats) and to the meaning of Bukatiende (wake up and let's go).
